The Great Fire of 1911 Exhibit & the 4th Grade
Curators •
Visit the exhibit at the Hill House
For the second year, Mrs. Schmick’s fourth grade class of
Fairmount School is collaborating with Bangor Museum and History Center
to guest curate the summer exhibit at the Thomas A. Hill House. Designed
by Mrs. Schmick and museum curator Dana Lippitt, as a service-learning
project, the students researched the Bangor Fire of 1911.
Using newspaper accounts, letters and other primary source material from
the Museum’s archives, they wrote labels for photographs of the fire
from their own creative interpretations of the “voices” of people who
experienced it. They also performed a stage production at Hill House
portraying Bangor citizens discussing the fire and its aftermath for
parents and guests.
Historic Walking Tours of the Mount Hope Cemetery and the Ghost Lamp Tours
Mount Hope Cemetery is the second oldest garden cemetery in the United States. It was designed to meet the mid-19th century city dweller’s desire for a romanticized rural landscape. Many of Maine’s statesmen, military and civic leaders are entombed here, along with some of the infamous characters whose colorful legends still survive.
